The neighborhoods

Toms River includes many distinct communities: the downtown area near the river, North Dover, Silverton and Gilford Park on the bay side, Pine Lake Park and neighborhoods inland toward Route 37, and the island beaches. Housing ranges from bungalows and capes to large suburban homes and bayfront properties. Many neighborhoods were hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and some homes were rebuilt or elevated afterward.

Getting around and the base

The Garden State Parkway runs through town, Route 37 heads east to the island and west toward Lakehurst, and Route 9 runs north and south. The Lakehurst section of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is a short drive west, so Toms River is a natural fit for Navy and joint-base families.
